If you're craving a slasher-horror flick that offers mindless entertainment while making you wince, chances are Bone Lake has grabbed your curiosity. A recent horror movie from director Mercedes Bryce Morgan arrived at cinemas on the third of October with an ridiculous concept and a suggestive title to complement.

A Combination of Comedy and Terror

Given the title like Bone Lake and an opening sequence featuring characters running stark naked through the woods—only to be shot with a hunting weapon in private parts—it's safe to assume there's plenty of levity throughout the movie. Moreover, the movie's conclusion, which portray the main couple exhausted and injured yet chuckling madly in unison, carry a sense of dark humor.

One would have to discover a reason to chuckle over, as well, if you experienced what the character Diego and the character Sage go through in Bone Lake. A couple plagued by relationship problems from the start—poor dialogue, unfulfilling intimacy, an unequal share of economic duties, you name it—their connection is challenged when another duo, Will and Cin, interrupt their love-filled retreat.

A Dark Change

Seemingly at the start to be a clash of contrasts between the two couples—Diego and Sage are awkward and working-class, whereas Will and Cin have a wealthy, luxurious existence and appear to be making out on all available spots—takes a dark turn as the weekend unfolds. Will and Cin play on Diego and Sage's insecurities in their partnership. They circulate falsehoods and talk about the protagonists, stating to know about an infidelity and further conflicts.

These insecurities explode in the most extreme way conceivable when Sage and Diego learn that Will and Cin are not simply here at Bone Lake accidentally: they possess it and have been luring couples to the estate in order to get them to cheat on their partners. The reason? Since Cin and Will are in fact related by blood. Following their taboo romance was found out by their family and they were split apart by force, they decided to take revenge on the world (including their relatives). Given that the society condemned them simply for their choice of love, then they'll turn against the everyone. Will and Cin's aim is to reflect back to all the duos they eventually end up murdering, in an endeavor to prove that their affection is no less real (or invalid) as the love of these other couples they try to split.

Surprising Strengths

Yet, what Will and Cin don't take into account is that Diego and Sage, in spite of their lack of communication with one another, do care for and adore each other. It required having a murderous couple try to split them apart and murder them to see it. While it appears serious, it is not shown that way. Bone Lake's mood is more camp than actual fear.

The movie concludes with Diego and Sage teaming up to evade Will and Cin's murderous intentions. What's interesting is that while, at the beginning of the film, you perceive a huge gap in the partnership between Diego and Sage in contrast to Cin and Will, by the finale, Bone Lake reverses it on its head. Will and Cin separate to pursue Diego and Sage, but Diego and Sage are interacting improved now. They join forces to kill the character Will with a chainsaw. They after that confront Cin, who dies horribly at the bottom of Bone Lake's lake—but only after the character Diego reclaims the wedding ring meant for Sage that the character Will had swiped and given to Cin.

Consequences

In the aftermath of their two killings, drenched in bodily fluids, Sage and Diego rest side by side on the back of a vessel. Unexpectedly, this is the nearest they've felt since the beginning of the story, given that all their romantic problems have been exposed for each of them to observe, and all they have remaining are their battered and bruised selves. As though to confirm their renewed intimacy and intimate understanding of one another, Diego moves closer to place the wedding ring on the character Sage's digit and, when she turns to examine it in the sunlight, the pair start chuckling.

It's not hard to understand the reason: When, Will proposed to Cin, it was a idyllic, affectionate instant. Whereas Diego follows suit for the character Sage, they've just gotten away from a horrific ordeal. But still, Diego's engagement question to Sage is free from falsehoods, simply the understanding that they've survived the most horrific event of their existence and, following all that, they yet desire to share the future together together.
