UK Broadens Methanol Toxicity Advisory List with Eleven Destinations

British Foreign Office has included an additional eleven new nations to its official advisory register regarding the dangers of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated beverages.

This revised warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Only last month, the government had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, following a number of notable cases including the deadly demise of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in blindness or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol often employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for human consumption.

While it is naturally produced during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers reduce it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.

Authorities' Recommendations for Travelers

Authorities official Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should know the signs of industrial alcohol contamination.

"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, choose well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.

"Should anything appears suspicious, like a headache that's far more intense than normal or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."

The complete register of nations noted as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
